An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a standardised document that describes the environmental impacts of a product throughout its entire life cycle: from raw material extraction through to manufacturing, use and recycling. Among other things, it covers energy consumption, greenhouse gas potential, resource consumption and waste generation. EPDs are based on the ISO 14025 and EN 15804+A2 standards and are verified by an independent body prior to publication. They do not make any judgements, but provide objective, verifiable parameters. This is precisely what makes them reliable for planning and tendering: products can be compared on the basis of the same data, and the values are incorporated directly into a building’s life cycle assessment.
